Target Readers:

Warning: Long post ahead.
I dont want to make the following discussion complex and want to make it as simple as well to put my point across.
Why do we need Appreciation awards ?
We are getting salary and we are supposed to work for that. Right?
-> (Place holder 1)
-> Awards are for recognsing people's hardwork and motivating them, so that they can contribute more entusiastically to company.
Why do we have different types of awards and why same person gets multiple awards. Isn't he motivated by first award
Or his motivation dies some time after the first award is given. Or His new award is superior to his previous award.
-> (Place holder 2)
-> As time progresses employee gets new roles and new challenges and his contributions needs to be recognised
Again, isn't he getting a hike for his new role or new challanges. And if you start the old theory "money-is-not-everything"
Is the same employee ready to take new role/challenges with no hike and lots of appreciation awards.
-> (Place holder 3)
Why does an employee show off his awards/certificates at his work place. (showing off the same at home is debatable)
Is it like "Dont-Mess-with-me poster to show off his superiority"
-> (Place holder 4)
Why other companies (like nokia, i know because my clinent place is nokia) dont have individual awards as such we had in nokia.
At one of the company party to commemorate the success of phone program, which was released in record time.
The team nature is similar to any wipro team. Some contribute more some contribute nothing.
But still, there were no "Feather in my cap" awards or "Best slogger of the season" award.
The team manager just walks to the stage and praises the team effort and never starts distributing awards.
-> (Place holder 5)
I do want to say that Nokia do have employee contribution recognition mechanism which is diffrent at core from wipro's (atleast this is what i understood).
An Employee never gets any special award for the job he is doing. He is already getting salary (doesn't he).
But, if he contributes to some thing extra which is not part of his job, Like
1. Internal testing of products
2. Contribution of ideas to Innovation schemes
3. Contribution to charity events
They are given small prizes which are more monetary type (like gift coupons, phones etc.,) rather than color print outs with flashy titles.
Likewise, if an employee create new process which optimizes working conditions inside team. He wont get a penny because it is his duty.
part of his objectives. (He is getting saalry and bonus for that. Isn't the same condition applicable to us)
-> (Place holder 6)
-> The nokia employees get paid more.
Then Why does indian employees at onsite who get paid the same (as nokians) need recognition awards/appreciation mails when they contribute to some offshore-proposal.
-> (Place holder 7)
The nokians dont get pissed off because their contribution is not recognised and dont stop working. They continue to work
and their salary is not so high when compared to local cost of living. (Nokia Bangalore is exception)
All the awards culture at wipro is only meant to satisfy the indivdual ego
-> (Place holder 8)
-> Wipro awards scheme is very cheap. just a color print out :)
Nope, i personally got an award which is a color print out and a 1000rs cash award.
-> (Place holder 9)
-> So, you got an award :)
Yes, i was happy at that time but seriously pissed off now
-> (Place holder 10)
I might be wrong or nokia's scheme does not work in india. i just want to know what others think.
PS: The author himself has got numerous awards with in wipro in a very short time at all levels (project, account and Bu level)
